Events at TYWLS of Queens, 2013-2014
8th Grade Trip to Washington, DC
Our 8th grade girls received the opportunity to visit several important sites in Washington as part of the Close Up Washington student program. On the last day they visited Capitol Hill and were able to experience democracy in action. We look forward to implementing this trip during the 2014-2015 school year with our next 8th grade class
Black History Month Bazaar 2014
The Black History Month Bazaar was held on Thursday, February 27th, from 3/3:30-5:30. This Bazaar is the culminating event after a month of celebrating black heritage. The Bazaar had three components:
1. African American history and heritage themed games raising money for a well in Africa
2. Food from the African Diaspora
3. Performances from the Diaspora ("Lift Every Voice and Sing" HS and MS performance choir, "A Dream Deferred", "aMeRican", "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, "Respect" as sung and performed by our own Aretha Franklin and b-girl dance combinations) and and Art Display from the Art classes
The Black History Month Bazaar was designed to raise money to buy a well for an African village through the entrance fee and ticket sales. Each clean water well cost $300. The Bazaar generated $475 dollars and Ms. Davis has offered to match that fundraising number with her own contribution. The entire fundraising event generated $950 that will be sent to buying multiples clean water wells in Africa.
An Intrepid Day in Space 2013
Students spoke to different women who work for NASA via SKYPE. we learned about the water filtration system aboard the space shuttle. Afterwards, we split into groups and each group designed a water filtration system using a waterer bottle, funnel, coffee filter, and a choice of two of the following: pebbles, sand, charcoal, marbles.
Natural History Museum Trip
On Sunday, June 1, 2014, science students from TYWLS, Queens visited The American Musuem of Natural History in Manhattan. Ms. Shumer obtained tickets for our students through her affiliation with the Museum. Students brought family members and friends to explore the exhibits and to view the planeterium and IMAX shows. They also had the opportunity to touch some of the world's largest known meteorites. A few students were able to peek into Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson's office. Dr. Tyson is the director of the planeterium and host of the television show Cosmos. Students took lots of pictures and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Alumnae Day 2014
Over a dozen alumnae returned to share their experiences with our students on Friday January 10, 2014. Alumnae from Gettysburg, University of Rochester, Hofstra, Syracuse, Alfred, several SUNY & CUNY institutions are represented today. The turnout was tremendous, another great event at TYWLS Queens.
Cool Women, Hot Jobs 2014
Women from diverse personal and professional backgrounds visit TYWLS, Queens to ignite a spark in TYWLS students. Volunteers will educate and inspire girls in the 6th-12th grades about the many career opportunities and possibilities ahead of them. Volunteers speak in classrooms and career fair settings about: daily activities; responsibilities and challenges; the education and skills needed to succeed in your field, your career path, and interesting aspects about your profession.
Multicultural Night 2013
Students, staff, and parents came together to celebrate all the different cultures present at TYWLS, Queens. The day culminated in a evening of food, performance and celebration.
Paris Trip 2014
After over a year of tremendous fundraising, seniors from TYWLS, Queens set out to explore Paris, France for Spring Break 2014.
Social Action Week 2014
An important part of Social Action week is making connections between what we do in our building and the local community. This lesson allows students to brainstorm in small groups and come to a consensus as a class as they decide how to creatively incorporate their ideas into a cohesive mural.
Team Paris Flapjack Fundraiser 2014
On Saturday February 15, 2014, members of the TEAM PARIS trip took over Applebees on Jamaica Ave from 8am to 10am. They worked as hostesses, wait staff, busers, and kitchen aids. TEAM PARIS earned $1000 with their Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebees. Congratulations young women! We can't wait for you to experience the city of lights. Women's International Day 2014
"Women's issues are human issues. Far-reaching concerns like gender equality, education, and access to markets affect men and women alike at work, home, and in our communities. That's why Bloomberg is amplifying its support of International Women's Day by hosting 60 events in 20 cities, up from 20 events in 11 cities over last year."
Six TYWLS of Queens young women attended Women's International Day. Five 11th graders, (Najah Holland,Chelsea Forde, Diksha Kaur, Jordyn Harrison), and one 12th grader, (Shantel Green). TYWLS Queens was one of only 2 other high schools in Attendance! The students attended speed mentoring and media workshop for high school and college students. The young women networked with employees from the Mayor's Office,Bloomberg Employees in both Business and Media
They also met Director and college students from CUNY Macaulay Honors Program
The young women also met Physicists and Biochemists from India, Latin America, Africa etc.
Amnesty International Human Rights Day, 2013
Human right activist and journalist Lydia Cacho visited TYWLS Queens for an Amnesty International Event in the gymnasium.
Dental Screening 2014
The Dental Screening workshop was a success on Monday. Just a quick, thank you, to all who participated in distributing, collecting, mentioning or gathering the students for the dental screening. We had 23 student participants and a total of 29 interested families. The girls asked great questions (as usual) and received some great dental hygienic tips. The Healthplex Associates and Dentist were very impressed by our girls and are interested in offering this workshop again to TYWLS of Queens in upcoming years. Below are some pictures from the event.
