At the beginning of the year I joined The New York City urban debate league because our debate club was cancelled due to the lack of attendance. However, I started tutoring kids in my neighborhood to pay for the tuition fee for the debate club. As time went by I started to get really good at debating and public speaking. When i debated the first time, i went maverick and won 3 rounds in a row and lost the last round. I became one of the top ten debaters in NYC. Today was a day I went to debate at Brooklyn Technical High School and I had the privilege to meet the mayor of NYC, Bill De Blasio. I told him I am from The young women's leadership school of queens and he told me that he knows our school. He said I know everything that goes around here. I don't only pay attention to the news that makes the morning headlines. I pay attention to schools with great pride and that's not only the specialize high school it's the schools that are getting to the same standards as them. The part that really stood up to me was that after he saw me debate he told me i was one of the best debaters he has ever seen and he was very proud of me. I was also really proud to be there from TYWLS and representing our school in front of hundreds of people and the mayor. I just want to say that opportunities come all the time but you just have to grab one and it will lead you the way to future. I also want to say that the announcements you make during the morning meeting is what inspired me to go this far with a little club we started here at TYWLS. I would like to thank you very much for bringing TYWLS this far with the help of Ms. Pineda and other teachers and of course the students. I just want to thank you so much for bringing me this far indirectly.
