With the Foreign Language Month currently occurring in TYWLS, it’s best to explain the importance of learning another language at a very early age. Learning another a language, is considered to be a very important skill amongst many, easily shown as it’s a topic that is taught in schools internationally, no matter what that language may end up being. But what exactly makes learning another language so important? Common sense answers to the question would lead to the obvious answer of general communication in which that would mean that by learning another language you would be able to communicate with others that do not speak the language you speak. Communication in general is the way of speaking, but through communication is the spread of ideals, cultures, and ways of life, so to learn another language would lead to the world sharing all those above as the world itself is becoming more connected to each other. With technology, the world is being connected to each other, other countries are becoming interactive with each other and thus would lead to many different languages being spoken. Online being a major source for this, as the World Wide Web connects different countries together with different languages being spoken.
Learning a different language however, isn’t important just for that. Different jobs around the world require the applicant to speak another language. This is mostly because of the connections between different businesses’ around the world becoming more successful internationally, thus requiring the employees to speak another language to continue the success of the business. Technology also plays a role in that, as many businesses’ are using technology to get themselves across internationally, which would in turn, need the usage of another language to get themselves known across the globe. To learn another language at the earlier age, the better, as the earlier the language gets learned, the more it stays and gets memorized in the mind as something new and fresh, so learning one early is especially good for a young mind.

French! Spanish! Any other language at all is beautiful! The beauty and essence of these languages are even more fantastic if it is learned at an early age. Addressing the situation, it is important that you (in general) learn another language at an early age. This is because as they say, “The earlier the better”. Studies also show that an infant’s brain is known and made to first learn language. From birth, babies use the sounds and words of speech that they are exposed to. They start to become used to it and use it themselves! They don’t even necessarily need to learn it because their brains develop when they are exposed to these languages. It obviously has to do with the brain because when you get older, you have to memorize it and at least try to use it. Whereas, when babies are born, they have a window that lets anything they are exposed to, in. At ages like just born through 5 years old, they are very enthusiastic about using what they hear! If they learned it now, imagine the big things they can do later! They could get good paying jobs for translating! They can go to another country and understand what they’re saying and even speak to the people and etc! There are so many advantages to learning another language and that’s why we should start as early as possible. Another language, another opportunity knocking as I would say!

By: Jada Pugh
Why should people encourage learning a foreign language? Many people believe they shouldn’t engage in learning a foreign language. However, learning another language can be very beneficial and useful throughout someone’s life. Not only learning a new language is fun, it is very educational and helpful.
Did you know that children in Europe start learning a foreign language at young ages? Ages of these children range from 6-9 years old; whereas in the United States we acknowledge foreign languages around 14 while in high school. Kids who have familiarized themselves with another language at an early language have more of an advantage than those who learn it later in life. Younger minds have the ability to grasp material quickly because they are still developing and learning. Therefore, introducing another language would add that language to their development. However, at older ages where one has already developed, it becomes harder to learn something that is foreign to what they are accustom. In addition, studies say that learning a new language can improve children’s thinking and creativity skills as well as mental flexibility. One area it targets is sharpening language, vocabulary, and reading skills such that foreign language learners have stronger vocabulary skills and have a better understanding of the language. For example, learning a French has the ability to help improve ones English. Since English shares Latin roots with French, learning a foreign word can enhance the chances of acknowledging an English word.
Although, it is more beneficial to learn a foreign language at an early age it shouldn’t restrict others who haven’t. No matter how old someone, they should be able to engage in learning a second language such that learning new languages opens many opportunities and possibilities.
First off, knowing a new language gives one the ability to interact and communicate with new people from other cultures. Wouldn’t you want to travel to other places in the world? It wouldn’t be as enjoyable and effective if you didn’t know anything about the language. How would you travel? How would you communicate? You would feel out of place and lost, when you lack the ability to understand the culture around you, communicate with the people and inability to participate in daily life activities. When you know the language however, it gives you a connection. Meaning you would have something in common which is the ability to speak that language. Therefore, you would have a more satisfying, enjoyable travel experience.
Learning a new language is also educational in other aspects of different countries; not only do you learn the language you can learn information about the countries. For example, in my French class as we learn French we were able to learn things as simply as what French kids do throughout their day and how they spend their free time. Did you know that children in France get out of school earlier on Wednesdays? They are able to catch up with school work or do extra- curricular activities. Most kids avoid watching television and if they do so it isn’t more than an hour. Even though, an shortened day sounds great French kids have to attend school on Saturday as well. In addition, we are also able to discover new countries that engage in speaking French. Did you know that besides Europe many other countries in Africa speak French? For example, countries like Equatorial Guinea, the Republic of Congo, Madagascar, etc.
Learning a foreign language and becoming very fluent in speaking that language is very impressive. This is one factor that will make you look effective on your college or job application. Most colleges require at least two years of foreign language study and considers foreign language as one of the requirements for a degree. In terms of jobs, it would be more likely for you to get a job if you have become fluent in another language. Careers in business, government, communications, engineering and science have some kind of division where foreign language is needed. Employers want you to be able to connect and communicate with different cultures while we confront a thriving global economy which calls for a need to connect to other parts of the world that don’t speak English. Overall, knowing another language will certainly increase your chances of being employed.
The process of learning a new language is fun. Learning a new language isn’t easy, however you can turn it into an enjoyable experience as you learn how to pronounce and write all over again!
